Political theater and stage-left exits
Re “Bush still squarely in Gonzales’ corner,” May 22
The Times quotes President Bush as saying Atty. Gen. Alberto R. Gonzales was up against the sort of theatrical behavior that had “caused the American people to lose confidence in how Washington operates.” Wrong, Mr. President. It is this administration that has caused the American people to lose confidence in how we are governed.
As far as political theater goes, we all know how the last act will end for Gonzales. Let’s let the final curtain fall now rather than later.

Bush dismisses congressional probes into Gonzales as political theater and stands by his old pal. Has there ever been a president who did more to politicize every facet of executive branch activities? The Bush White House has been a textbook example of playing politics with the business of government. Bush should be ashamed -- but then, as we have seen, he has no shame.
