Student aid to the undocumented
Re “For citizens only,” editorial, May 22
Let me get this straight: State Sen. Gil Cedillo (D-Los Angeles) is sponsoring legislation that would enable undocumented students to receive financial aid at public colleges and universities, even though the same aid is often denied to many students here legally. What’s wrong with this picture?
If there is such thing as a list of the most absurd legislative proposals, this is right up there with supplying illegal aliens with driver’s licenses.

A nation is not absolved from its obligations to its citizens just because those citizens enter the U.S. without documentation. Mexico and other countries should provide funding for their citizens’ higher education in the U.S. Once they complete their studies, the undocumented immigrants can return to their home countries, where their education can help build more prosperous societies.
