What’s new? A little of what’s old

Share

THE Ojai Music Festival in charmingly rickety Libbey Bowl is all about presenting the new. The grandiose, big-business Hollywood Bowl is never new. But then, it all depends upon how you define “new.”

The festival weekend in June features old and new, the newest being the world premiere of Hungarian composer Peter Eotvos’ “Sonata per Sei,” a revised version for chamber forces of the Piano Concerto he wrote for French pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard two years ago. Aimard and Eotvos’ are first-timers in the land of lost horizons (though both have appeared regularly with the Los Angeles Philharmonic).

Meanwhile, Michael Tilson Thomas’ conducting Beethoven’s Ninth at the Bowl in July may seem same old same old. But it’s been about two decades since MTT’s been at the Bowl, and his soloists happen to include hot young singers Kelly O’Connor, Jessica Rivera and Eric Owens.
