Reasons for rescue groups’ rules

Re “Fur flies over DeGeneres’ trouble with rescue group,” Oct. 18

There are good reasons why animal rescue groups are so particular regarding the adoptions of their animals. Some adopters have used the pretext of providing a loving home for the pet when they actually want the animal for a more sinister reason, like animal sacrifice. This is why black cats are commonly not placed around Halloween. By his own admission, former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist -- while in medical school -- adopted cats from several animal shelters on the pretense that he was looking for a pet, and then used and killed the cats in his medical experiments.

These are among the reasons the animal shelters require the lengthy questionnaires and home inspections of the potential pet adopters.

I have always liked Ellen DeGeneres for her grounded personality, so I was surprised to see her reaction over the Iggy affair. Pet adoptions rules are in place so animals don’t get placed in abusive homes. The rules apply to celebrities too. I would rather see a little girl cry for an afternoon than undermine an important system of protection.

Some people who run the animal rescue groups are nothing more than licensed hoarders. They are often control freaks who love being the boss, pushing their rules on people and going to any length to prove they are right.

This is a crying shame. If those who run Mutts & Moms would get off their high horse (or dog), they’d admit that this was a happy, healthy home for the puppy.

Now, because of this incident, the public may rethink if they really want to tangle with a rescue group. That may cut down on animal adoptions from these organizations and hurt the good ones with a healthy mission for their adoptees.

Our culture has come down to this: You can leave a child on a doorstep, but an animal has contract protection.
