Charges dropped against sergeant
Manslaughter and assault charges against Marine Sgt. Johnny F. Winnick have been dismissed, the Marine Corps announced Thursday.
Winnick, 24, of San Diego, had been charged in the death of two Syrians and the wounding of two others in June 2007. A hearing officer recommended the charges be dropped.
Lt. Gen. Samuel Helland, commanding general of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, agreed with the recommendations.
