When Palmerston comes to your town, make sure you have an extra drum kit handy. “We were the only band playing in Montreal and we forgot our cymbals in Toronto,” says guitarist Basilio Fernando Ferreira, recalling a tour mishap. “I feel sorry for the neighbors of that venue, but they didn’t have their mailboxes the next morning.” Destruction, especially the sonic variety, is the norm for the thundering three-piece, whose name stems from a town near Ferreira’s and brother-drummer Gabriel’s native Toronto. It wasn’t until moving to L.A. and auditioning more than 200 vocalists that the pair discovered surname-free French, and Palmerston was born (above from left, Basilio, Gabriel and French). “It just worked,” Ferreira says. “We were on the same page as people and musicians.” Producer Dale Penner (Nickelback) helped the band hone its sound on its self-titled debut, which draws on thrashing metal and alternative influences. With songs like “Misery” and “Everybody’s Suffocating,” the mood’s as heavy as the music. “The angst that comes along with being a young person is really well captured by this record,” French says, noting the group’s penchant for aggressive performances. “[We] intend to destroy every stage we hit. L.A.-based Meiko, the Hotel Cafe waitress-turned-Hotel Cafe headliner, is the latest signing to MySpace Records; her repackaged debut album is due for August release. She finishes up a residency at the Hotel Cafe tonight. . . . Saying it’s “probably our last live appearance for some time,” the Autumns, behind new album “Fake Noise From a Box of Toys,” hold forth at Spaceland Friday. . . . With “Brain Thrust Mastery” just out, We Are Scientists hits the El Rey Theatre Tuesday. . . . And Snow & Voices -- the duo of Lauri Kranz and Jebin Bruni -- celebrate the release of their new album, “What the Body Was Made For,” with a show Tuesday at the Hotel Cafe.
