Final Four streakers

Share

UCLA and Florida are the latest teams to reach consecutive Final Fours. Of course, the Gators won back-to-back titles. The Bruins lost to Florida in the title game two years ago, and fell to the Gators in a semifinal last season. Now the Bruins are seeded No. 1 in the West Regional and are trying to win their first national championship since 1995. Here is a recap looking at how teams that advanced to the last weekend two years in a row since 1988 fared the following year.

FLORIDA

(2006, 2007)

* The Gators became the first team since Duke (1991-92) to become repeat national champions but were relegated to the NIT this season after finishing 21-11 overall. Coach Billy Donovan was going to go to the NBA, but he came back for an anticlimatic season.

KANSAS

(2002, 2003)

* The Jayhawks lost to Maryland in the Final Four and to Syracuse in the 2003 title game that turned out to be Roy Williams’ final game as head coach of the Jayhawks. Kansas reached the Elite Eight as a fourth-seeded team the following year under Bill Self.

MICHIGAN STATE

(1999, 2000, 2001)

* Tom Izzo led the Spartans to a glorious three-year run highlighted by the school’s national championship in 2000. The next year, the Spartans were awarded a No. 1 seeding and lost to Arizona in the Final Four.

KENTUCKY

(1996, 1997, 1998)

Rick Pitino bolted for the NBA after guiding the Wildcats to the national title in 1996 and taking them to the title game in 1997. The next year, Tubby Smith directed Kentucky to its seventh national championship.

ARKANSAS

(1994, 1995)

Nolan Richardson led the Razorbacks to the school’s only national championship, then followed it up with a loss to UCLA in the title game. The following season the Razorbacks came into the tournament with only a No. 12 seeding but still reached the Sweet 16.

MICHIGAN

(1992, 1993)

Led by Chris Webber, one of the greatest freshman classes in history landed the Wolverines in the championship game two consecutive years. The next year Michigan lost to eventual champion Arkansas in the Elite Eight.

DUKE

(1988, 1989,

1990, 1991, 1992)

The Blue Devils failed to reach the national title game in 1988 and 1989 and lost to Nevada Las Vegas in the championship game in 1990. The next two seasons, Duke won it all to become the first repeat champion since UCLA’s remarkable string of seven straight titles.

GEORGETOWN

(1984, 1985)

John Thompson guided the Hoyas to the school’s only NCAA title in 1984 and to the title game in 1985, the first year the tournament expanded to 64 teams. The next year the Hoyas lost in the round of 32 as a No. 4-seeded team.
