Detroit’s Justin Verlander beats CC Sabathia and the New York Yankees

at Detroit 4, New York 2: Justin Verlander (1-2) had a season-high nine strikeouts and gave up seven hits in seven-plus innings, and Magglio Ordonez hit a two-run home run against CC Sabathia (1-2) to lead the Tigers to their third win in a row. The Yankees have lost four consecutive games.

Texas 6, at Baltimore 4: Michael Young hit a home run and David Murphy ended a tie with a two-run single in the sixth inning. Matt Harrison (1-2) gave up four runs in the first two innings then retired 16 consecutive batters.

at Kansas City 7, Toronto 1: Brian Bannister (2-0) gave up one hit over seven innings and Jose Guillen hit two home runs to lead the Royals. Bannister walked six, including five of the first 14 batters he faced.

Tampa Bay 7, at Minnesota 1: Jeff Niemann (2-2) gave up three hits and one run in 5 2/3 innings and the Rays’ bullpen didn’t give up a hit the rest of the way. Carlos Pena hit his major league-leading ninth home run for the Rays.

Seattle at Chicago, ppd., rain: The game will be made up today as part of a doubleheader.
