Irish’s Floyd is likely out for year

Notre Dame probably will be without receiver Michael Floyd for the rest of the regular season and quarterback Jimmy Clausen might not be 100% when the Fighting Irish play at Purdue on Saturday.

Floyd underwent surgery Sunday for a broken left collarbone. Coach Charlie Weis said he hasn’t been told how long Floyd will be out, but he expects to be without him the rest of the way. Floyd might be available for a bowl game.

The sophomore went into the Michigan State game second in the nation in receiving yards at 160 a game. He was injured in the 33-30 victory falling to the ground trying to make a touchdown catch.

Weis said it appeared Clausen has something between a turf toe and an arch injury on his right foot.

Grothe is done

South Florida senior quarterback Matt Grothe will miss the rest of the season because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. Grothe, who has started 41 straight games, was hurt in a 59-0 victory Saturday over Charleston Southern.

Washington ranked

Washington moved into the Associated Press rankings for the first time in six years after its 16-13 victory over USC. The Huskies are at No. 24, their first ranking since Sept. 28, 2003.

Florida concerns

Florida’s flu bug is cause for alarm, at least for Coach Urban Meyer and his staff.

Running back Jeff Demps, tight end Aaron Hernandez and defensive end Jermaine Cunningham were isolated in the days leading up to Saturday’s game against Tennessee.

Although Meyer did not say any of the players had H1NI (swine flu), he certainly was worried the devastating virus could hit his top-ranked team.

“It is a panic level of proportion I’ve never seen before,” Meyer said. “That’s coming from me. You hear about, I think, Wisconsin had 40 players. Ole Miss had 20 players. My wife, with her great insight, said, ‘Do you realize the swine flu and everything is hitting the Florida campus last week?’ My gosh.”

Phillip Payne caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Omar Clayton with 36 seconds left to give Nevada Las Vegas a 34-33 win over visiting Hawaii on Saturday night.
