No. 1 Auburn will have an All-American anchoring each side of the ball when the Tigers play for the national championship.

Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton and defensive tackle Nick Fairley were voted to the Associated Press All-America team along with Oregon running back LaMichael James, who will face Auburn in the BCS title game in Glendale, Ariz., on Jan. 10.

Auburn is one of five teams with two players on the first team. The others were Wisconsin, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma and Nebraska.

No. 2 Oregon was represented by James, who led the nation in rushing at 153 yards per game and finished third in the Heisman voting, and cornerback Cliff Harris, a second-team selection.

Heisman runner-up Andrew Luck of Stanford was the second-team quarterback, finishing behind Newton again. Kellen Moore of Boise State, the other Heisman finalist, was the third-team quarterback for the second straight year.

Iowa update

Iowa says it is reviewing its drug testing policies for student-athletes in the wake of star receiver Derrell Johnson-Koulianos’ arrest last week.

Athletic Director Gary Barta says some “flaws and inconsistencies” have been found in the policies and some athletes have likely gotten around drug tests in the past.

Johnson-Koulianos was suspended for the Insight Bowl on Dec. 28 after he and a roommate were arrested on drug charges. Running back Adam Robinson has been suspended for the game for failing to comply with team policies, and oft-injured running back Jewel Hampton plans to transfer.

New name

North Carolina’s bowl game is getting its third name in a decade. The Meineke Bowl will be renamed the Belk Bowl beginning next season, officials announced Tuesday. The new sponsorship deal with the Charlotte-based department store company runs through the 2013 game.
