Shopping: Tommy Bahama Laguna Beach is a bar, grill and retail store

Special to the Los Angeles Times

There aren’t too many places where you can pick up a striped sweater and a swordfish sandwich in the same spot. Such is the practical magic of Tommy Bahama Laguna Beach — a new bar, grill and retail store housed under the same roof.

The shop ‘n’ snack outpost — which features a full-service restaurant, a stocked Tommy Bahama store and a bar with a view of the sparkling Pacific — is the 13th combination store-eatery for the island-inspired clothing company.

But really, it’s the first of its kind for the company, said Terry Pillow, chief executive of Tommy Bahama. “This is a one-off,” he explained. “It’s the first one of this design where we’ve tailored it for a specific community. Many of our restaurants are very large, while this one only seats 100. And the store and the restaurant are on the same level, right next to each other.”

Housed inside a historic building, the new digs have been in development for two years and on the brand’s wish list for more than a decade.

“We were talking about opening a store in Laguna 12 years ago when we opened our first [restaurant-store] in Naples, Fla.,” Pillow said. “People in Laguna really have a beachy, laid-back thing. And we’re a relaxed brand.”

The design of the 5,500-square-foot space was inspired by traditional Bahaiman architecture, which melds airy lightness with accents of dark wood. The store-restaurant features white wood paneling, mahogany details and concrete and wood floors.

The restaurant’s grill-style entrees, which range from $12 to $25, include poblano chicken, mahi mahi, steaks and burgers. Starters include ahi tuna tacos and lobster corn dogs.

The shop section features the full range of Tommy Bahama’s easy, breezy apparel for men and women — which happens to be looking hip and modern these days. Though the classic printed “camp” shirt (popular with baby boomers) is still available, there are also Generation X and Y staples, such as washed cargo shorts and striped nautical dresses.

The store also carries the brand’s swimwear, accessories and gift and home products. Core prices for apparel range from around $32 for a graphic T-shirt to $495 for a leather biker-style jacket.

“We are a lot of things to a lot of people,” Pillow said. “Our motto is, ‘Life is one long weekend.’”
