When, where: Sept. 25, departs from Island Packers, Ventura Harbor
Highlights: The Catalina Island Conservancy and Island Packers provide the chance to explore San Miguel, the westernmost Channel Island. The day includes hiking, a visit to an 11,600-year-old Chumash site and a stop at Point Bennett, home to one of the world’s densest concentrations of wildlife, including more than 30,000 seals and sea lions.

LAKE HAVASU CITY, ARIZ.
Fly-In at the Lake and Patriot Days
When, where: Sept. 25 and 26, Havasu Air Center
Highlights: The second annual event features an air show, rides in and tours of historic aircraft, models, speakers, aviation displays, entertainment, the Traveling Vietnam Wall and dedications to all military branches.
Cost: Most activities are free, though donations to Operation Gratitude are encouraged

SANTA ROSA, CALIF.
Sonoma County Grape Camp
When, where: Sept. 27-29, various Sonoma Valley wineries
Highlights: This fourth annual hands-on experience lets attendees (no more than 30) harvest grapes and blend wine with growers, vintners and chefs. Other highlights include tours, tastings, receptions and dinners.
Cost: $3,500 a couple; $1,900 for singles, including tuition, two nights at the Vintners Inn, all meals, tastings and transportation during the event.

Great Columbia Crossing
When, where: Oct. 3, Astoria-Megler Bridge
Highlights: Some 3,000 runners and walkers will take their once-a-year chance to cross the Columbia River on foot during this 29th annual 10K across North America’s longest truss-span bridge.
Cost: $35; $25 for ages 18 and younger

Taste of Carmel
When, where: Oct. 7, Carmel Mission courtyard
Highlights: During this annual evening under the stars, dozens of area restaurants and wineries serve tastes during dancing and a silent auction. In keeping with this year’s disco theme, guests are encouraged to wear 1970s costumes.
