Starbucks to open first Evolution Fresh juice store in California

Share

There’s a new kind of Starbucks coming to California: The coffee chain is planning to set up one of its Evolution Fresh Inc. juiceries in San Francisco this fall.

The Seattle company already operates hundreds of coffee outlets around the Golden State. But the Evolution Fresh location in the Bay Area will be the first of its kind outside Washington.

Starbucks on Friday opened its second juice store in downtown Seattle, a few months after launching the chain in Bellevue, Wash. The company is planning to open yet another in Seattle soon.

At the stores, “juice experts craft fresh juice blends and serve up globally inspired recipes using fresh ingredients in a unique retail setting with convenient free local delivery,” according to the company. Evolution Fresh also features organic, vegetarian and vegan dining options — such as muesli and Greek yogurt for breakfast and bowls of lentils, wild rice and kale for dinner — along with packaged sandwiches, wraps and snacks.

The goods aren’t cheap. In Bellevue, a 120-calorie, 16-oz. bottle of coconut water with pineapple runs roughly $5. The same amount of juice prepared by hand costs $8. Smoothies are $7.

The juice is also bottled and sold at Starbucks coffee shops as well as in premium grocery stores and natural food shops. Starbucks is now, in addition to being a coffee brewer, also a pastry purveyor, an energy drink maker and occasional alcohol seller.
