Prototype for ‘Back to the Future’ hoverboard selling for $12,995

We probably won’t have real, working hoverboards by 2015, but a prototype of the hoverboard that was in “Back to the Future Part II” is available right now.

In the 1989 movie, Marty McFly travels to the year 2015, where (when?) Doc Brown introduces him to futuristic gadgets including a hoverboard -- essentially a flying skateboard. Hoverboards are used in a chase scene between McFly and bully Griff Tannen.

While McFly gets a pink, girls hoverboard made by Mattel, Griff pulls out a black-and-red, booster-powered board with the image of a growling pit bull.

The hoverboards were one of the iconic gadgets from the movie.

It’s the prototype of Griff’s hoverboard prop that is being sold on Ebay for $12,995 -- plus $79.99 for shipping.

The seller, Hollywood Parts, says it got the hoverboard from the movie designer who created the pit bull logo. The seller it can provide proof of the item’s authenticity.

But as futuristic as the hoverboards looked in the movie, the prototype prop is actually made out of solid wood, and the seller admits there are some visible dents and paint scratches. And, obviously, it doesn’t hover.

Still, it’s likely to be popular among die-hard “Back to the Future” movie fans.
