Frank Gehry endows new annual prize at SCI-Arc
Architect Frank Gehry has made a new donation to the Southern California Institute of Architecture, and as a result, the school is naming a new prize after him.
SCI-Arc announced Wednesday that Gehry, a trustee of the school since 1990, and his wife, Berta, have made a $100,000 donation. The money will go toward the establishment of the Gehry Prize, which the school said will be awarded annually to the best thesis projects in the Graduate Thesis Weekend, in September.
The first Gehry Prize will be awarded at the 2012 graduation ceremony on Sept. 9, the school said. The winner will be selected by critics and a panel of jurors.
Gehry, 83, is a winner of the Pritzker Prize, the highest honor on the field of architecture. He was born in Canada but has lived most of his life in Los Angeles. His notable creations include Walt Disney Concert Hall in L.A. and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain.
His design for the Eisenhower Memorial in Washington has sparked a fierce debate with members of the Eisenhower family.
