Iwan Baan to sell photographic work to benefit Sandy relief

In the days following Superstorm Sandy, Dutch photographer Iwan Baan snapped a startling aerial image of the darkened New York skyline. The photograph, which depicts Lower Manhattan plunged into a black out, was featured on the cover of New York magazine’s Nov. 12 issue.

Baan is now planning to sell limited-edition copies of “The City and the Storm” to benefit the relief effort in New York. The edition of 10 will be sold for $100,000 each to benefit the Mayor’s Fund To Advance New York City in support of Superstorm Sandy relief efforts.

The prints will be roughly 71 inches by 41 inches. Baan’s image will be on display in Los Angeles at the Perry Rubenstein Gallery, which represents the photographer. The image will be exhibited as part of Baan’s upcoming solo show “The Way We Live” at Rubenstein’s new Hollywood gallery. The exhibition is scheduled to open Feb. 20.

Baan’s photograph is also featured in a poster sale from New York’s Museum of Modern Art. The poster version of the photograph is being sold for $20 at the museum’s Design Store, with proceeds benefiting the Mayor’s Fund.

Perry Rubenstein recently signed on Baan as one of its artists. Baan is known for his architectural photography. He was the recipient of the first Julius Shulman Photography Award in 2010.
