Good Form: Strength in combination

Share

Develop a strong core with this simple yet challenging move. If you’re new to exercise, do this move without dumbbells; as you become more comfortable with the move, hold a pair of dumbbells for added resistance.

Lie on your back holding light dumbbells in each hand. Raise your legs so your knees are bent directly above your hips. Hold the dumbbells together over your chest with your elbows slightly bent, facing them toward your knees (this keeps the move safe for your shoulders). Inhale first, then exhale and press your navel in toward your spine.

On an exhale, slowly lower your right leg until your toes touch the ground. At the same time, move your arms back behind your head with your elbows bent and tucked in facing your knees. Inhale as your bring your right leg up to meet your left leg and contract your chest, bringing the dumbbells over your chest. Repeat with the other leg. Continue to alternate legs for 30 to 60 seconds. During the entire exercise, make sure your abdominals stay flat so you don’t over-arch your lower spine.
