Letters: Obama, a thinking-man’s president
Re “Obama administration’s ‘roller coaster’ on Syria,” Sept. 12
Saying President Obama’s Syria strategy is like a roller coaster is too simplistic; it seems to conflate strength with reaching an unwavering decision. Would we want such complete certainty from our leader in a situation like this?
I prefer a president who actually changes his mind as new information and advice require. Describing Obama’s quick embrace of Russia’s plan to disarm Syria of its chemical weapons as desperate implies that his main goal should be not to appear foolish. If Syria’s chemical weapons can be neutralized, who cares about which leader gets the credit?
I want my president to think and rethink a mission before plowing ahead just to appear committed.
