Gov. Brown ordered to respond to latest bid to halt gay weddings

SAN FRANCISCO -- The California Supreme Court on Friday ordered Gov. Jerry Brown to respond by 8 p.m. Friday to a legal bid to halt same-sex marriages.
In an order signed by Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye, the court said Brown must respond to a request from the backers of Proposition 8 for a temporary hold on same-sex marriages while the court considers a new legal bid to enforce the marriage ban.
ProtectMarriage, the sponsors of Proposition 8, have until 9 a.m. Monday to respond.
[For the record, 4:05 p.m. Friday, July 12: This post has been corrected to reflect a Friday night deadline for Brown to respond to the court, and clarifies that ProtectMarriage has until Monday to respond.]
The order also asked for additional written arguments by Aug. 1.
Cantil-Sakauye’s order suggests the court will rule quickly on whether to stop marriages immediately but may take at least a month to decide whether ProtectMarriage’s new challenge should prevail.
