Police are investigating the death of a 14-year-girl who was found by her brother Wednesday in their parked car at a high school in Madera.

The siblings arrived at Madera South High School about 6:30 a.m., but the girl stayed in the car because her class didn’t start until later in the morning, ABC affiliate KFSN-TV reported. It wasn’t until her brother, a senior at the school, got out of class about 3 p.m. that he discovered her body.

He drove his sister to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Her identity was not immediately released.

Police believe heat or an underlying medical condition may have played a factor in her death, the Fresno Bee reported.

Madera Police Sgt. Robert Salas told KFSN-TV the investigation was in its early stages.

“At this stage in the investigation, we’re looking at all factors,” he said. “What was the reason she didn’t wake up, or what’s the reason she didn’t exit the vehicle?”
