One dead, more victims feared in Philadelphia building collapse

At least one woman was killed and more victims were feared dead after a vacant Philadelphia building collapsed onto a Salvation Army store as it was being demolished Wednesday.

Mayor James Nutter was expected to hold an 11 p.m. news conference about the collapse, which killed a 35-year-old woman and hurt at least 13 other people.

At least one missing man, Borbor Davis, was also feared dead. A WPVI-TV reporter said she was with the man’s wife when the woman reportedly received a phone call from officials confirming his death.

Other local outlets cited anonymous officials confirming that there had been more than one person killed when the four-story building partially collapsed onto the thrift store at 22nd and Market streets about 10:45 a.m.

A 66-year-old woman was pulled from the rubble about two hours later. There was no fire or explosion reported after the incident.

Those demolishing the building had valid permits, officials said.
