Re “Divorcing Pakistan,” Opinion, June 19

Andrew J. Bacevich’s otherwise excellent article refers to Pakistan as “ a key partner in the global war on terrorism.” Pakistan has never been a cooperative ally in combating terrorism, nor will it ever become one — just ask India.

Becevich notes that Pakistan was once “the planet’s leading proliferator of nuclear weapons” and “remains in cahoots with various and sundry terrorist organizations.”

Never by any stretch of the imagination can Pakistan be considered a key partner of the United States in the war on terrorism. It would be more accurate to label Pakistan as an opportunist in using terrorist partners to further its national interest.
