State Sen. Ted Lieu (D-Torrance), widely viewed as a leading candidate in the crowded race to succeed Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Beverly Hills), has reported raising more than $600,000 for his campaign, with more than $579,000 left in his campaign coffers.

According to a report filed with the Federal Election Commission on Tuesday, Lieu had brought in $621,762 by the March 31 end of the fundraising quarter; that included a $55,000 loan he made to his campaign.

Lieu also reported an additional $66,000 in unpaid campaign bills.

Lieu joins some other Democrats who earlier Tuesday reported raising more than half a million dollars for what is expected to be a very expensive race. They are defense attorney David Kanuth, former Los Angeles city controller and councilwoman Wendy Greuel and journalist and radio show host Matt Miller.
