There is one day left in league play for local prep girls’ soccer teams, and the outcome from play in Thursday’s Sunset League action, will determine the league champion.

In the Golden West League, there will be no such drama Thursday: Ocean View already has captured the championship.

Ocean View scored a 1-0 victory Tuesday over visiting Segerstrom to win the title outright with a game remaining Thursday at Loara. Kristina Cooley scored off an assist from Kaci Montoya, and Emma Malsy had six saves for the Seahawks who are 8-0-1 in league. Ranked No. 6 in CIF Southern Section Division 5, they improved to 13-2-5 overall.

“We had control of the game from the beginning, and it was a very solid day for our defenders,” Ocean View Coach Jose Sanchez said. “They were able to shut the Jaguars at every attempt, and they were excellent in covering zones. It wasn’t the most exciting game, but the girls showed that they are capable of adapting to different styles of play and still come out with the result.”

Sanchez said winning the league title with a game still to play “wasn’t easy.”

“Santa Ana, Westminster, and Segerstrom have solid squads and they all have very different ways of playing,” he said. “Our girls were able to adapt to it and with our speed, possession, and defensive work, we were able to get the results. I am proud of this group, but we have a bigger goal. We have to keep working hard.”

In a league game Feb. 4 at Orange, Ocean View shut out the Panthers, 3-0. Jasmine Tapia, Iran Enriquez and Micayla Shook scored goals, Adamary Saldana, Ruby Alvarez and Daniela Gonzalez had assists, and Malsy had six saves for the Seahawks. Sanchez said Dani Moran was his team’s player of the game.

•In the Sunset League, Huntington Beach holds the league lead by a single point heading into the final day of league play Thursday.

The Oilers sit atop the standings despite falling at home Tuesday to Los Alamitos, 2-1. Sawyer Koelsch scored on a play assisted by Darcy Weiser, and Rachel Harris had five saves in the loss.

Huntington, the No. 6-ranked team in CIF-SS Division 1, slipped to 6-1-2 in league. The Oilers lead both Edison and Los Alamitos in a tight league finish.

“We lost the battle but not the war, because we still control our own destiny,” Huntington Coach Raul Ruiz said.

“It was a very physical game, but the girls kept their composure,” Edison Coach Kerry Crooks said.

“Our team gave a 110% today and competed from whistle to whistle,” Fountain Valley Coach Scott Goldman said. “An unlucky break at the end of the first half ended up being the deciding factor in a very close match.

“We are a young team and will continue to learn from these experiences.”

Heading into Wednesday’s action, Los Alamitos led the league at 8-1. Edison was next at 7-1-1, and Fountain Valley followed at 6-2-1. An Edison win combined with a Los Alamitos tie or loss to Huntington Beach would give the Chargers a share or outright league title.
