Football: Excitement grows for Chaminade-Hart game

It’s week 15 of a grueling high school football season, and even though finals are coming this week and next week for Chaminade and Hart, players are excited to still be playing. On Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at College of the Canyons, the two teams play in the CIF state championship Southern California Division II bowl game.

“We’re fired up,” Chaminade Coach Ed Croson said. “We’re very happy to be playing. It’s a long, hard season, but we think it’s worth it.”

Hart players were so exhausted last weekend after winning the Northern Division final that Coach Mike Herrington said most spent Saturday and Sunday sleeping for long hours. But he said practices have been good this week. “Our guys want to play,” he said.

If this game is anything close to the first meeting between Hart and Chaminade, fans will be in for a treat. Hart won in overtime, 55-54.

“We face a loaded Chaminade team,” Herrington said.

Neither team has ever had a 15th game, and the season is so long that last week, Herrington got in the mail a summer passing league invitation.

The winning team will have to deal with practicing in the middle of finals next week in preparation for playing the Northern California winner in the CIF state championship Division II bowl game on Dec. 21 at StubHub Center in Carson.
