PHOENIX — Yasiel Puig was held out of the Dodgers’ workout Thursday, a day after he fouled a pitch off his right thigh.

Manager Don Mattingly described the decision as precautionary and said he expected the 23-year-old outfielder to resume practice Friday. Puig is not scheduled to undergo further testing.

“He had just a little bit of swelling,” Mattingly said. “I don’t think we need to see him out there limping around. We’re better off just taking care of it for a day.”

Earlier in camp, Puig was dealing with a minor shoulder problem. As a result, the Dodgers had him on a limited throwing program.

As the rotation turns

Left-hander Paul Maholm is experiencing discomfort in his elbow and is one of only a few pitchers who are yet to throw live batting practice. Maholm had similar issues last September pitching for the Atlanta Braves.

“More precaution than anything else,” Mattingly said.

Maholm was recently signed to add depth to the rotation. He would probably start the season as the Dodgers’ fifth starter if Josh Beckett has a setback in his recovery from surgery.

As for Beckett, Mattingly is encouraged by how he is looked Wednesday throwing live batting practice.

“I wouldn’t have known that he’d had anything done last year,” Mattingly said. “It looks free and easy. It’s not like he’s laboring. His tempo is good.”
