Diamondbacks beat Dodgers, 4-1, in Cactus League opener

AT THE PLATE: Yasiel Puig batted .517 in the Cactus League last year. One game into the exhibition season this year, he’s batting .667. Puig was two for three and drove in Carl Crawford for the Dodgers’ only run with a third-inning double to left-center field. Designated hitter Justin Turner, a candidate for the team’s vacancy at second base, was one for two with a double and a walk.

ON THE MOUND: After Clayton Kershaw gave up three runs in two innings, Javy Guerra, Seth Rosin and Jose Dominguez combined to shut out the Diamondbacks over the next four innings. “If it wasn’t for that Kershaw guy, we would have been in good shape,” Mattingly joked. The most impressive of the group was Rosin, who struck out five of the seven batters he faced. In the Philadelphia Phillies system last year, Rosin was selected by the New York Mets in the Rule 5 draft and sold to the Dodgers. Because of his status as a Rule 5 player, Rosin will have to be offered back to the Phillies unless he is on the Dodgers major league roster for the entire season.

EXTRA BASES: Alex Guerrero played his first game in the United States. Starting at second base, the lifelong shortstop turned a double play in the third inning. At the plate, Guerrero was hitless in two at-bats.
