BMW is getting even. Again.
The Munich, Germany-based automaker announced on Thursday details on its all-new 2 Series coupes. The 228i and M235i will replace the current 1 Series models when they go on sale in early 2014.
The new names reflect BMW’s recent strategy to begin all coupe names with even numbers, while sedans and wagons will stick with the traditional odd numbers. This is how the current 3 Series sedan turned into the 4 Series coupe and convertible.
Despite the new name, the pair of 2-Series coupes will be compact, rear-wheel-drive cars just like their predecessors.
The M235i will continue to use a turbocharged, 3.0-liter, inline six-cylinder engine. It will make 315 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. Zero-60 mph will be possible in 4.8 seconds and the car will start at $44,025.
The M in the name denotes that this is the more performance-oriented of the two (which its power should indicate). This version was developed in conjunction with BMW’s storied M division, the group responsible for the iconic M3 and M5 cars, among others.
Other go-fast goodies on the M235i include a specifically tuned sport suspension, larger air intakes in the front grille, and high-performance brakes. A mechanical limited-slip differential (which works to limit rear-wheel slip for better traction) will be optional.
2-Series fans looking to save a large amount of cash and drive a little slower have the 228i to consider.
This coupe will jettison the 128i’s inline six-cylinder for the smaller, 2.0-liter turbocharged four cylinder that BMW uses in a wide variety of its vehicles. It will make 240 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, and will run from zero-60 mph in 5.4 seconds, according to BMW. This car will start at $33,025.
The 228i and the M235i will start with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Buyers who like to row their own boat can opt for a six-speed manual at no charge.
With a busy slate for the L.A. Auto Show in November (including the world debut of the 4-Series Convertible), look for this 2-Series to officially show its face for the first time at the Detroit Auto Show in January.
