Work has begun on a $75-million apartment and shopping complex called the Hudson in Pasadena’s burgeoning Playhouse District.

Greystar Real Estate Partners, a multifamily residential developer based in Charleston, S.C., is building 173 apartments in two five-story buildings at 700 and 770 E. Walnut St. The Hudson will also have ground floor space for rent to shops and restaurants.

The developer hopes the upscale housing will appeal to both young professionals and empty nesters with strong ties to Pasadena, said Perry Pound, managing director of development for Greystar. A Gold

“The Hudson provides a unique opportunity to experience true mixed-use and transit-oriented living.” Pound said.

The apartments will range in size from 547 square feet to 1,540 square feet. There will be studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments along with two-bedroom townhouses. Tenant amenities will include a recreation room and fitness center, large interior courtyards, swimming pools, shade structures, storage units, secured bike storage and a barbecue area with bench seating and tables.

Construction is expected to be completed in fall 2016.

Other projects are underway in the 32-block Playhouse District surrounding the venerable Pasadena Playhouse theater. Among them are an Art Deco-inspired office tower with shops and restaurants called Playhouse Plaza and a Spanish Revival apartment complex named Union Village.
