Stock market shakes off a three-day slump

NEW YORK — The stock market had its best day in a month, shaking off a three-day slump.

The Dow Jones industrial average gained 154 points, or 0.9 percent, to 17,210 Wednesday.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index rose 15 points, or 0.8 percent, to 1,998. The Nasdaq composite rose 46 points, or 1 percent, to 4,555.

Bed Bath & Beyond jumped 7 percent. The home goods retailer reported earnings and revenue for its latest quarter that were better than Wall Street analysts were expecting.

Health care stocks rose the most of the 10 industry sectors in the S&P 500. Only one sector in the index fell, utilities.

Bond prices fell. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 2.56 percent.
