Ex-Duck Saku Koivu asks $6.6 million for Irvine home

Saku Koivu, the veteran NHL center who played the last five years with the Anaheim Ducks, has put his home in Irvine on the market at $6.5999 million.

The listing comes less than a month after Ducks general manager Bob Murray announced that Koivu, along with forward Daniel Winnik and goalie Jonas Hiller, would not be extended contract offers this off-season.

The Tuscan-style residence, combining formal living spaces and casual indoor-outdoor environments, features a fossilized stone and reclaimed brick exterior with antique roof tiles and five fireplaces salvaged from France. Clad in handsome beams and limestone, the nearly 7,400 square feet of living space includes a 1,500-bottle wine cellar, a gourmet kitchen, seven bedrooms and six full bathrooms.

Through telescoping walls of glass, interiors seamlessly transition onto a courtyard with a fireplace and a covered loggia of more than 1,000 square feet. An outdoor kitchen and a pool also reside on the half-acre grounds.

The Finnish-born player, 39, spent more than a decade with the Montreal Canadiens before joining the Ducks in 2009. He is the older brother of Mikko Koivu, a center and captain for the Minnesota Wild.

Koivu and his wife, Hanna, purchased the property in October 2009 for $4.975 million, according to public records. James Jekums of Seven Gables Real Estate is the listing agent.
