Mark Mothersbaugh of Devo detects Chinatown space, moves ahead

Mark Mothersbaugh of Devo and his wife, Anita Greenspan, must have decided it was time to go forward. Move ahead. They have bought a multi-use building containing apartments and a gallery in Chinatown for $798,000.

The 3,300-square-foot structure includes 300 square feet of retail space on the ground floor and twice that much in the ventilated basement for storing, say, the flower-pot hats favored by the new wave band. OK, they are also known as energy domes.

There also are two one-bedroom apartments with wood floors and granite countertops. Although the living space was recently remodeled, the pair no doubt has their own plans to “Whip It” into shape, to egregiously borrow the title of the Devo hit song.

Mothersbaugh, 63, is a founding member of the band, formed in the early 1970s. The singer-guitarist is also a painter. He is a composer for numerous television shows, including “House of Lies” (2012-14), “The Carrie Diaries” (2013) and “Regular Show” (2010-13).

Ming-Sheng Hou of Vaac Realty was the listing agent. Adrienne Doty-Carolan of Rodeo Realty represented the buyers.
