Old California charm

Times Staff Writer

Newly built with an Old California flavor, this house is in an equestrian community in the middle of Brentwood that has grabbed its share of headlines.

During a 2002 transaction, film director Steven Spielberg and his actress-wife, Kate Capshaw, bought the main horse-riding area from the L.A. Unified School District for $12 million, then donated the property to establish the Sullivan Canyon Preservation Assn., which operates the riding rings.

The property, originally earmarked for an elementary school in anticipation of rising enrollments that never materialized, had been used as a community equestrian club for decades.
