“The Book of Mormon” will hold a lottery for a limited number of $25 seats before each performance when the national tour of the hit musical returns to the Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles starting Jan. 21.

Lottery entries will be accepted at the box office beginning two and a half hours prior to each performance. Each entry can request a maximum of two tickets and only one entry per person will be allowed.

Names of the winners will be announced two hours before curtain, and the winners must be physically present and must pay in cash. During the first week of performances, one winning lottery winner for the Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday performances will be given their tickets free of charge.

FACES TO WATCH 2014: Theater

“The Book of Mormon” is scheduled to run at the Pantages for 16 weeks, from Jan. 21 to May 11. Performance times are at 8 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays; 2 p.m. on Saturdays; and 1 and 6:30 p.m. on Sundays. There are no performances on Mondays.

This marks the second time that “The Book of Mormon” has come to L.A. The last time was in 2012 as part of the first national tour.

The pre-performance lotteries will be similar to the ones held when “The Book of Mormon” first ran at the Pantages.

“South Park” creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker co-wrote the musical with Robert Lopez (“Avenue Q”). Parker directed the show with Casey Nicholaw, who also serves as choreographer.

The musical follows two mismatched Mormon missionaries who travel to a remote African village. The show’s bawdy humor targets a slew of sensitive subjects, including AIDS and female circumcision.

The musical is still running at New York’s Eugene O’Neill Theatre, where it has been a top Broadway grosser since it opened in 2011.

For the Record: An earlier version of this story stated that one winning lottery winner for first-week performances would receive their tickets free of charge. Only the winners of the lotteries Wednesday-Friday are affected.
