A new stage version of Truman Capote’s “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” is aiming for Broadway, with “Game of Thrones” actress Emilia Clarke expected to play Holly Golightly. The last attempt to bring “Breakfast” to Broadway, more than 40 years ago, became the stuff of theater legend -- but not in a good way.

The ill-fated 1966 musical stage adaptation, starring a young Mary Tyler Moore, is one of the most famous flops in Broadway history. The production closed before it even officially opened, running for only four preview performances at New York’s Majestic Theatre.

Producer David Merrick famously explained that he didn’t want to subject anyone to an “excruciating, boring evening.” The musical, which also went by the name “Holly Golightly,” featured a book by Edward Albee, who was hot off of “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” The songs were by “Funny Girl” composer Bob Merrill.

The new stage adaptation, which is aiming for a February opening on Broadway, will be a play, not a musical. Prolific playwright Richard Greenberg has adapted the Capote novella for the stage.

“Breakfast” was published in 1958 and in 1961 was turned into a hit movie starring Audrey Hepburn. The story follows the somewhat amoral adventures of a young New York socialite.

Sean Mathias is expected to direct the new stage adaptation.
