Musical version of ‘A Bronx Tale’ reportedly in works

The tale of “A Bronx Tale” never seems to end.

The acclaimed solo play, written and performed by actor Chazz Palminteri, debuted in Los Angeles in 1990 and later found success in New York. In 1993, it was turned into a moderately successful movie directed by Robert De Niro.

Palminteri revived the play on Broadway in 2007 and took it on a national tour, which came to L.A. at the Wadsworth Theatre.

Now a musical version of the movie adaptation is reportedly in the works, with De Niro expected to direct. The site Showbiz 411 reported this week that the project is being produced by music mogul Tommy Mottola, and that Palminteri is writing the book for the musical.

The project appears to be in the early stages. No casting has been announced.

“A Bronx Tale” tells the story of a boy named Calogero who comes from a working-class background and gets involved with local mobsters.

One actor who probably won’t be in the new version is Lillo Brancato Jr., who played the teenage Calogero in the 1993 movie. The actor was sentenced to 10 years in prison in 2009 for his part in an attempted burglary in the Bronx that left a police officer dead.

He is eligible for parole in 2014.
