Downtown L.A.’s Grand Park readies for July 28 partial opening

The Grand Park in downtown Los Angeles has set an official July 28 opening date for the public -- but the event will mark only a partial unveiling of the two-year, multi-million dollar construction job.

A spokeswoman for the project said the opening will encompass just the portion of the Grand Park from Grand Ave. to Hill St., and that the rest of the space will be opened in the fall on a date to be determined. Construction on the Grand Park began in 2010 and carries a price tag of $56 million.

The completed project is expected to encompass 12 acres of outdoor park space stretching from Grand Ave. at the Music Center at the north end to Spring St. on the south end.

The spokeswoman said the second part of the park needs time for completion of landscaping and that another public inaugural event will be held in the fall.

Rios Clementi Hale oversaw the landscaping for the project while the firm Fluidity served as a consultant on the restoration of the Arthur J. Will Memorial Fountain.

The Music Center will organize festivities to go along with the July 28 public inauguration. A separate civic dedication is scheduled for July 26.
