Carole King musical on Broadway will be made into a movie

“Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” will be the latest Broadway hit to be turned into a movie.

Sony Pictures Entertainment will adapt the jukebox stage musical into a big screen feature that will be produced by Tom Hanks as well as Gary Goetzman and Paul Blake. No casting information or release date has been announced.

The movie is being adapted for the screen by Douglas McGrath, who wrote the book for the musical.

Since it opened last year at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre in New York, “Beautiful” has been a popular audience draw, recouping its initial Broadway capitalization of $13 million after less than a year.

Jessie Mueller won a Tony Award for lead actress in a musical for her performance as King. The role is being played in New York by Chilina Kennedy.

The musical tells the story of King’s rise to prominence as the songwriter of such hit singles as “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” and “Will You Love Me Tomorrow?” It also tells of her personal and professional relationship with Gerry Goffin, who co-wrote some of her songs.

Sony controls the rights to King’s songs through its division Sony/ATV Music Publishing.

The national touring production of “Beautiful” is scheduled to come to the Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles during summer 2016.

Broadway musicals that were recently turned into movies include “Into the Woods,” “Jersey Boys” and “Les Miserables.”
