Tonys 2015: Kelli O’Hara wins lead actress in musical for ‘The King and I’

Kelli O’Hara won the Tony for lead actress in a musical Sunday for her portrayal of Anna in “The King and I.” This is her first win and sixth nomination.

O’Hara beat out Kristin Chenoweth of “On the Twentieth Century,” Leanne Cope of “An American in Paris,” Beth Malone of “Fun Home” and Chita Rivera of “The Visit.”

Director Bartlett Sher revives Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “The King and I” with choreography based on the original by Jerome Robbins, telling the story of a British schoolteacher who tries to help an Eastern king come to terms with the modern world. The musical received nine Tony nominations.
