TV ratings: ‘Chicago PD’ debuts solid; CBS wins with ‘People’s Choice’

NBC’s spinoff “Chicago P.D.” got a solid sampling by viewers Wednesday night as “The People’s Choice Awards” and a returning “Modern Family” drew plenty of eyeballs.

The police-centered “Chicago Fire” offshoot opened at 10 p.m. and drew 8.56 million viewers overall and a rating of 2.0 among key 18-49-year-olds, according to early numbers from Nielsen. That’s a strong 18-49 number, compared with other dramas that bowed at 10 p.m. this season. Only NBC’s “Blacklist” did better. It’s initial pull with advertiser-desired young-adults is about even with last year’s debut of “Deception,” which was later canceled.

Also on NBC, a returning “Revolution” rose a couple notches from its last original episode to a 1.6 in 18-49, while “Law & Order: SVU” jumped 31% to a 2.1.

CBS won the night outright with the help of “The People’s Choice Awards,” which was watched by an average of 10.2 million people and scored a 2.3 rating in 18-49. It was the most-watched telecast on the four major networks, though it fell in the key demographic from last year’s 2.7.

ABC’s comedies came back from their midseason break, starting with “The Middle,” which rose 10% to a 2.0. Rebel Wilson’s “Super Fun Night” returned with two episodes sandwiching the ratings winner “Modern Family.” The earlier “Super Fun Night” brought in 4.9 million viewers outside of its regular time slot, as did the one after “Modern Family,” which held steady in the demographic from its last original weeks ago. “Modern Family” was the highest-rated program in the key demo, with a 3.5. ABC also aired a rerun of “David Blaine: Real or Magic.”

Fox had the movie “Step Brothers,” while the CW was in all repeats.
