Human Centipede crawls back to life in Los Angeles

The Human Centipede is back.

After some delays in filming last year, the third installment of the controversial cult horror franchise in which human victims are sewn together is starting up production in Los Angeles.

Six Entertainment Co. is scheduled to shoot a scene for “The Human Centipede III” on Friday in the Monterey Park area, according to a permit filed with FilmL.A. Inc., which handles film permits for the city and the county.

The production of the movie, to be distributed by IFC Films, had been held up last year by a dispute over script issues between Six Entertainment Co. and German actor Dieter Laser, who played the evil Dr. Heiter in the original 2009 film.

The film will further spur local feature film production. Year-to-date, location filming in the Los Angeles area for features is up about 13% compared with the same period a year ago. The increase has been fueled by a crop of lower budget independent movie as well the Seth Rogen comedy “Townies” from Universal Pictures and Marvel Studios’ “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”, according to data from FilmL.A.

Television also is having a strong year. Production days for TV shows have increased 22 % so far this year compared to 2012, reflecting a strong pilot season and a steady stream of reality TV programs. Commercial activity is running about 5% higher than last year, according to a Los Angeles Times review of permit data.
