Ridley Scott and Machinima sci-fi collaboration fizzles
A planned collaboration between Ridley Scott’s production company and Machinima to bring science fiction film shorts to the popular YouTube channel has fizzled.
RSA Films announced this spring that it would produce 12 short films for Machinima, in hopes of reaching its global audience of millions of youthful viewers. Scott, best known for such science fiction films as “Blade Runner” and “Prometheus,” was to serve as executive producer.
Although the project attracted interest from sponsors, scheduling problems prevented the parties from finalizing a deal, according to representatives for Scott and Machinima. The project would have required coordinating the schedules of multiple directors drawn from RSA’s roster of 80.
The news was first reported by Videoink.
YouTube touts Machinima as a success story -- a site that serves up billions of video views and attracts a young male audience that’s attractive to advertisers.
However, it is undergoing a period of transition, with Chief Executive Allen DeBevois announcing that he would step down and seek a successor to take over day-to-day operations of the budding digital network.
