ABC’s beltway drama “Scandal” was Thursday night’s highest-rated show while Fox’s new comedy “Surviving Jack” got off to a slow start, according to early numbers from Nielsen.

“Scandal” drew 8.8 million viewers overall and a rating of 3.1 among the advertiser-coveted 18- to 49-year-old audience, marking a 7% improvement from last week’s episode in the key demographic. The show starring Kerry Washington has enjoyed strong numbers this season, with Thursday’s installment up 19% from its comparable year-ago telecast in 18-49.

“Grey’s Anatomy” was the No. 2 show, earning a 2.5 in the demo, while the fairy tale spin-off “Once Upon a Time in Wonderland” rose week to week to a still-low 0.9. On average, ABC scored a 2.1 in 18-49, in which a ratings point equals roughly 1.3 million viewers, finishing in second place behind NCAA basketball regional semifinals on CBS.

Preliminary ratings for live sports are often unreliable because they are not adjusted for time zones, but early numbers indicate a 2.5 rating in 18-49 and about 7.8 million viewers overall for the network in prime time.

Fox’s new “Surviving Jack,” starring Christopher Meloni as an unconventional father in early 1990s Southern California, opened with a 1.3 in the demo and 5.1 million viewers overall, which is not a spectacular start for a show with an “American Idol” lead-in. “Idol” itself earned a 1.9 in 18-49, flat with last week’s series low. “Hell’s Kitchen” was steady week-to-week at a 1.8.

NBC had two reruns of “Hollywood Game Night.” Thursday’s episode of the tear-jerker drama “Parenthood” notched a 1.4 in 18-49, up 8%.

On the CW, “Vampire Diaries” hit a series low of 0.7, while “Reign” fell to a 0.6.
