TV ratings: ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ rises a bit for ABC, as CBS beats NBC

After weeks of declines from its big series premiere, “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” on ABC scored a ratings uptick for the first time Tuesday night, according to early numbers from Nielsen. Meanwhile, CBS has beaten NBC’s “Voice”-powered lineup in the key 18-to-49 demographic for the first time this season.

“S.H.I.E.L.D.,” the comic-book spy series from Joss Whedon, starring Clark Gregg as the resurrected Agent Coulson, drew 6.85-million viewers, up 1% from last week, and a rating of 2.3 in the 18-to-49 demo, for a gain of 5%. Tuesday night’s episode included a tie-in with Marvel’s current movie “Thor: The Dark World.”

Elsewhere on ABC, “The Goldbergs” fell 6% from last week to a 1.6 rating. The special “David Blaine: Real or Magic” drew a 2.5 in 18-to-49 to win its time slot in 18-49 and key male demographics. The special helped the network achieve its strongest Tuesday performance in eight weeks, tying NBC in second place with a 2.3.

Breaking NBC’s streak, CBS won the night with a 2.5 in 18-to-49. In that demo, by the way, a ratings point equals roughly 1.3-million viewers. CBS was also the most watched network overall with 15.5-million viewers on average. “NCIS,” the show with the biggest audience at nearly 19.4 million, was flat week-to-week in 18-to-49 with a 3.0. “NCIS: Los Angeles” rose a tick to a 2.5 and “Person of Interest” was flat at 2.0.

“The Voice” on NBC is still winning in the demo despite falling 9% to a 3.1 from last week. “The Biggest Loser” tipped the scale at a 1.8, matching last week’s rating, while “Chicago Fire” fell 14% from last week to a 1.9, going up against David Blaine.

Fox’s freshmen comedies “Dads” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” both grew single digits, while “New Girl” was even with last week and “The Mindy Project” fell 14%.

On the CW, the iHeartRadio album release party for Lady Gaga took in an average of 889,000 viewers, leading into “Supernatural,” which fell from last week to a 0.9 in 18-to-49.
