Vimeo launches on-demand video service

Share

Vimeo has launched an on-demand service that allows creators to sell their own works -- and keep 90% of the revenue after transaction costs.

The online video platform showcased its new offering at the South By Southwest festival in Austin with a screening Tuesday of “It’s Such a Beautiful Day,” the latest project from Academy Award-nominated animator Don Hertzfeldt.

Vimeo Chief Executive Kerry Trainor said the on-demand feature builds on a series of tools the service provides to Vimeo Pro members, who pay a $199 annual fee.

With the on-demand service, creators can make money from the direct online distribution of their videos. They can set their own price, determine where the video will be distributed, on a country by country basis, and offer the project on their own websites as well as through Vimeo.

Vimeo, a subsidiary of IAC, attracts a global audience of about 93 million people a month. That’s substantially smaller than the reach of rivals such as YouTube, which gets about 800 million visitors a month.
