YouTube to step up the funny in May with launch of Comedy Week

Internet comedy fans won’t need Tosh or his Comedy Central show “Tosh.0” to filter through millions of hours of video to find the funniest content during the week of May 19-25.

Instead they can turn to Google’s YouTube, which is producing its first ever Comedy Week — pulling together actors, comedians and Internet celebs for a week of standup, sketches, music and live performances.

Among the performers attached to the project are Vince Vaughn, Sarah Silverman, Michael Cera, Seth Rogen, Ed Helms and Norm Macdonald.

Former “Jimmy Kimmel Live” producer Daniel Kellison will executive produce the venture, which, aside from the star vehicles, will also showcase YouTube’s lesser-known original content makers — like the witty Los Angeles musical duo Garfunkel & Oates, whose risque and sarcastic lyrics are in direct contrast to their cutesy personas. Kellison himself already oversees two YouTube comedy channels: Jash and the Video Podcast Network.

Comedy Week will kick off with a live Sunday night variety show streamed globally from Los Angeles’ Culver Studios. Produced by MTV Movie Awardsregular Joel Gallen, the show will run anywhere from 90 minutes to two hours and will also include an hour pre-show with red carpet coverage.

YouTube is keeping the program schedule tight for now. A rep for the company says more names and a more definitive program will be announced in the weeks to come.
