Emulate your favorite Oscar night fashion for less

Oscar fashion and beauty have an immeasurable amount of influence on what people wear to high-profile events, including other red carpets and high school proms. So it comes as no surprise that retailers begin releasing knockoffs and real versions of Oscar gown favorites to the masses at breakneck speed.

While that gorgeous custom made “Nairobi blue” Prada gown worn by supporting actress winner Lupita Nyong’o on Sunday night will be a hard one to replicate well, other gowns lend themselves to being copied quickly and fairly convincingly.

For instance, first thing Monday morning, JC Penney began touting dresses and accessories that look strikingly like a few of Sunday night’s Oscar looks.

A strapless, deep navy number is not unlike Sandra Bullock’s Alexander McQueen dress, though it definitely lacks the impeccable draping of the real thing. Still, if someone wanted to emulate Bullock -- or Amy Adams in her navy Gucci gown for that matter -- this would do the trick, and it’s just $134.

Pale nudes and champagne hues ruled as the main gown color of the evening and JC Penney also has a beaded, nude dress similar to the Chanel gown worn by Jessica Biel that goes for $118.

David’s Bridal also has gowns similar to Bullock’s (for less than $200), Julia Roberts’ black peplumed gown ($229) and those worn by Angelina Jolie ($299), Jennifer Lawrence ($139), Kerry Washington ($59.99) and more.

For anyone wanting the real thing, high-end online retailer Moda Operandi has actress Anna Kendrick’s J.Mendel gown available for pre-order on its site. The black gown with cutouts and ruby red embellishments is from the designer’s fall 2014 collection and can be had for $8,200.

Since the jewelry donned by actresses at the Oscars was relatively simple and timeless, the jewels will be easy to copy, even if a high-end price tag for the real thing is out of the question.

The Caroline Hill Collection offers earrings strikingly similar to those worn by Jolie, Kate Hudson, Calista Flockhart and more for under $20 a pair.

JC Penney carries a cubic zirconia necklace similar to the lariat-style Harry Winston diamond necklace worn by Charlize Theron. The Kenneth Jay Lane CZ pendant is $135.

And White by Vera Wang, a diffusion brand from the famed wedding dress and ready-to-wear designer, has a more accessible version of Nyong’o’s Fred Leighton gold and diamond headband for $128.

So even if Nyongo’s dress is hard to emulate, at least something similar to her delicate hair accessory can be had easily. It could even end up sparking the biggest trend of the coming prom season.
