When you chat with Emmy nominees on the morning the nominations are announced, spirits are high. The creative talent are, to a person, so grateful to be a part of the series they are on that to get an awards nod is just the gravy on top. But what if, in some alternate universe, they couldn’t actually be a part of their current series? What show would they hope to land on instead? We asked some of the lucky few who were singled out on nominations morning.

Thomas Middleditch, actor

“ ‘Baskets.’ I love it. Hilarious but very sad and sweet. I love the premise of a man who desperately wants to be a clown but can’t get respect, but in real life he is the clown. The sad, sad clown. It’s beautiful.”

Constance Zimmer, actress

“UnREAL”

“Probably ‘Mr. Robot.’ I’m kind of weirdly obsessed with that show. It’s so well-written and it’s so well-acted. I think [star] Rami Malek is so fantastic, the way he subtly performs this completely whacked-out person, it’s really inspiring to watch. What [creator] Sam Esmail has written, I can’t sleep at night sometimes when I watch that show. That’s the crazy thing about TV right now. ‘Master of None,’ I would love to be on that show. What Aziz Ansari has done is incredible, so much of that is based on truth. I’m all about shows that feel like you’re seeing something you shouldn’t see, a little peephole into people’s lives, which is bizarre because that’s kind of what people feel like when they watch reality television.”

Kirsten Dunst, actress

“Fargo”

“I love ‘Baskets.’ I love that show so much. I think it’s my favorite show on television — the perfect balance. And I was so happy that Louie Anderson got nominated, he’s so good on that show. It’s so real and heartbreaking. I just think it’s brilliant. FX is just killing it right now. I also wouldn’t mind being a cast member on ‘Saturday Night Live,’ that would be my other choice.”

Anna Chlumsky, actress

“Veep”

“‘Horace and Pete.’ I love it. I think it’s so cool. But of course I’m a masochistic theater actor.”

Susanne Bier, director

“The Night Manager”

“A show like ‘Transparent.’ I’m a huge fan of shows that have a very distinctive voice. I think that that show has a very distinctive voice. I love “Veep.” I’m mentioning comedies maybe because I’m in such a good mood.”

Marti Noxon, writer

“UnREAL”

“I’m obsessed with ‘Silicon Valley.’ I’ve never seen anybody do as long a sustained penis joke with as much success. It’s blazingly dirty and yet incredibly smart. The Venn diagram of geeks who write code and geeks who write television -- there’s a lot of crossover.

Kenya Barris, creator

“ ‘Veep.’ I just think it’s one of the best shows on TV. I love politics, I love pulling the curtain back. They pull the curtain back on politics in an amazing way with amazing actors and amazing writers.”
