Oscars 2013: Why did Ben Affleck get snubbed for best director? [Poll]

Shock and awe accompanied Thursday morning’s Oscar nominations when Ben Affleck’s name was left off the list of nominees for best director, a roster that included Michael Haneke (“Amour”), Benh Zeitlin (“Beasts of the Southern Wild”), Ang Lee (“Life of Pi”), Steven Spielberg (“Lincoln”) and David O. Russell (“Silver Linings Playbook”).

The 40-year-old actor-director had been widely praised for “Argo,” his third feature. Specifically, Affleck was lauded for his ability to create and maintain a taut tension throughout his 120-minute geopolitical thriller.

Said L.A. Times critic Kenneth Turan in his October review, “Affleck’s abilities start with an instinct for storytelling, for always moving the action forward while never losing track of the need to keep events convincingly realistic.”

Yet academy voters didn’t agree.
