Producers Guild Awards shift to early date in 2014

With the Screen Actors Guild moving their 2014 awards show up 10 days (to Jan. 18), the Producers Guild of America is following suit, shifting their show up a week to Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014.

Both events will fall on the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend.

While Hollywood has yet to finish up this year’s awards run, the jockeying for position for next year’s circuit of award shows is already heating up as the various guilds and critics groups contend with the 2014 Olympic Winter Games scheduled to run from Feb. 7 to Feb. 23 in Sochi, Russia. There’s also the Super Bowl to work around.

Though there has been much discussion within the ranks of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences about moving its Oscar telecast earlier to contend with the award show fatigue and possibly boost ratings, 2014 is unlikely to be the year that it happens.

The academy shifted its telecast from March to February in 2004 but during the 2010 Olympics, they returned to March. The group has yet to announce its date for 2014.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. also has not announced a date for 2014’s Golden Globes. This year the event was held Jan. 13.

The Directors Guild and the Writers Guild also need to stake out their dates for next year’s ceremonies.

If the academy does push its telecast to March, 2014’s awards calendar could feature a slew of award shows in January, and then a long gap before the Oscars.
